At this point you have reached your ultimate
destination, the Heceta
Head Lighthouse. It is 56 feet in height, but it
situated some 205 feet above the ocean. When you look at the
pictures you will notice that a number of windows were blocked
over. This was due to vandalism following conversion to an
automatic light. However, they found that the
original windows provided ventilation through the structure. The
lower portion of the lighthouse has a double wall, the interior wall
being constructed of brick. Because of proximity to the ocean,
moisture can cause the brick to deteriorate. They have since
installed a fan and a heating system to resolve the problem.
You will notice that the lighthouse is in need of some paint and other
work. Recently it was announced that a major project for both the
lighthouse and the Devil's Elbow State Park. Repairs to the
lighthouse will be made. A new entrance and parking lot on the
other side of the bridge in the cove will allow northbound traffic to
make a safe exit from the highway. Southbound traffic will
use the existing entrance. This will allow visitors to safely
exit the highway and return without having to cross traffic.
