The original Lowell bridge built in 1907 replaced a nearby
ferry that crossed the Willamette River to the town of Lowell. In
the early 1940's a truck accident knocked the trusses out of alignment
on the bridge. A new bridge was built in 1945. When
the area would be flooded when the Dexter dam which was under
construction making it necessary to raise the bridge and rebuild the
roadway. The bridge continued in use until 1981 when a
modern concrete structure (seen to the right of the covered bridge)
bypassed the the bridge. Future plans for this covered
bridge includes restoration and rehabilitation. Also creating a
parking area with an interpretive center.
The bridge is located at the intersection of Hwy. 58 and South Pioneer
Rd (to the town of Lowell. This is about 13 miles east of
the Interstate 5 / Highway 58 interchange at Goshen.
